We’ll winter is slowing coming to a close and spring is hopefully here to stay. As a result it is time to get outside and make your lawn the envy of the neighborhood. Below is a step by step process to get you started.
- Rake your lawn. Many yards received vole damage (trails of dead grass from a small rodent) this winter and those trails if left will suffocate your lawn. You can either rake them by hand or rent a power raker from the local rental store. By doing this you will allow the lawn to breathe which will result in a thicker/healthier lawn.
- Apply Fertilizer. Lawns naturally green up well on their own in the spring time, but in order to maintain that green you need to give the lawn the nutrients it needs. I recommend using a fertilizer similar to a 21-0-8 (label on all fertilizer bags). The 21 stands for nitrogen, which encourages green coloring and growth. The 8 represents phosphate which encourages deep root growth and overall thickness. When you purchase your fertilizer make sure it has crab grass pre-emergent in the bag mixed in, so you can prevent crab grass from germinating later in the summer. If you plan on doing any seeding this spring you will have to replace your fertilizer and crab grass pre-emergent with a starter fertilizer, such as a 10-10-10. The reason for this is the crab grass pre-emergent will prevent your grass from germinating. Once your seed is tall enough to cut, you’ll be safe to apply your crab grass pre-emergent.
