As many of you know, I lost my sister to suicide 10 years ago. In an effort to prevent this from happening to others I have made an effort to educate others of the causes and affects of suicide. I currently serve on the board of directors for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. AFSP is doing incredible work to help raise awareness of the signs and impact of suicide on American families. With the alarming rate of suicides especially now among our war veterans and teenagers, it’s critical to make people aware.
The non-profit AFSP focuses on suicide prevention initiatives through groundbreaking research, educational campaigns, innovative demonstration projects and critical policy work. The organization has 39 chapters across the country and provides assistance and support to families affected by suicide. They report that 34,000 Americans die from suicide each year, with one suicide attempt taking place every minute.
I have set up a memorial fund in my sisters name and will be donating a portion of my commissions earned in 2011 to The AFSP Susie Hanson Memorial Fund. People can donate to the AFSP Susie Hanson Fund anonymously by clicking HERE. It isn’t necessary to buy a home to contribute.
